What it costs to insulate a house
Across all materials, professional insulation runs $1–$7 per square foot installed. For a typical single-family home that lands the whole project between $1,600 and $8,000, and many contractors carry a $1,500–$2,000 minimum just to roll a crew and equipment to your address. Material is the single biggest lever (fiberglass batts are the cheapest thing you can buy and closed-cell spray foam is the most expensive), so the same square footage can quote two or three times apart.
On a normal job, labor accounts for roughly 40–60% of the total. Most crews bill $40–$80 per hour per worker and run two to three workers, so site conditions (tight crawl spaces, steep attics, finished walls that have to be drilled) move the labor line as much as the material does. The rest is material, and that's where your choice of product decides the bill:
- Material only: roughly $0.50–$2.80 per square foot depending on type.
- Labor only: roughly $0.20–$1.70 per square foot, more for spray foam and retrofits.

R-value is the other half of the equation.
